PuTTY is a free SSH client. SSH is a network protocol that allow you to make a network connection from your PC (the client) to another computer (the server). The network connection carries your keystrokes and commands from the client to the server, and carries the server's responses back to you. SSH (which stands for secure shell) uses strong cryptography to protect your connection against eavesdropping, hijacking and other attacks.

Samba is an implementation of a Windows file sharing protocol and enables Windows clients to share files on a Unix host. Samba is running on our file server, by using Samba you can access your home folder from a Windows PC. You can thus save important Windows files in your home folder which is backed up regularly and you can open Windows documents (.docx) that reside in your home folder with Windows applications (Word).
A common way to use Samba on a Windows client is by mapping the home directory to a Windows Drive:
Mail messages sent from outside the departments to email@example.com or to
firstname.lastname@example.org are delivered to Computer-Center's mail server mailrelay.biu.ac.il.
After filtering spam and viruses the messages are further delivered to Math and CS mail server mailhost.cs.biu.ac.il. The messages are finally put locally in the user's mailbox (The file
var/spool/mail/user_name) in mailhost which is NFS mounted on other servers.
Mail messages sent to email@example.com are delivered to gmail.

To run a graphical application on a remote server and display it on your PC at home, there is a need to transfer the graphic display to your desktop. This can be done either by running an X display on your PC and transferring the X commands from the server to your PC, or by running the X display on the server and transferring the graphics using VNC. The first is easy, the second gives session persistence.
There is a problem when running an X server (Exceed) behind NAT since the router gives an unroutable local IP address
Solution, tunnel X through SSH and run Exceed in passive mode.
Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) allows remote network access to a Windows Desktop. Connecting with RDP to computers within Bar-Ilan from outside, is blocked by a firewall. Solution, tunnel through SSH.
